On average, 65% of the heat is lost from the loft and walls in summer. Government grants for insulation are given under either ECO4 scheme or Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS). Free loft insulation grants will keep your property warm and never allow heat passing through pitched roof areas. Cavity wall insulation grants are provided to those properties older than 30 years that have a cavity space between their external walls. Moreover, solid wall insulation applied for internal & external walls.
How to Apply?
1-Applying through the ECO4 Scheme
To qualify for free home insulation under the ECO4 scheme, you must be receiving certain government benefits. ECO4 focuses on supporting low-income households and vulnerable individuals.
The ECO4 Scheme has greatly helped people in the UK. These installations keep families warm, save energy, and lower carbon emissions. So far, it has resulted in the installation of:
Insulation Grant | Number of Measures Installed |
Loft | 63,097 |
Solid wall | 40,074 |
Cavity wall | 19,152 |
Under-floor insulation | 1,248 |
Other | 3,224 |
2. Applying through Great British Insulation Scheme
The Great British Insulation Scheme (formerly known as ECO+) began in late March 2023. In its first year, over 11,600 installations of insulating measures were carried out in 9,400 houses. And aims at energy efficiency improvement for homes that do not meet ECO4 eligibility. With a £1 billion cash-grant allocation, the project’s target is the assistance of 300,000 families in the UK in the alleviation of fuel poverty and the targeting of carbon emissions. Unlike ECO4’s ‘whole-house approach,’ GBIS usually provides one type of insulation per home, mainly loft or cavity wall insulation, which can save families up to £300 a year.

Insulation Types Covered under the Grants
The government grants for home insulation under both the ECO4 Scheme and the Great British Insulation Scheme cover various insulation types to help improve EPC. Here are the main insulation types you can receive under free government grants:
Loft Insulation Grants
Total cost of insulating your loft is up to £1000 in the UK, but getting free government grants means this much saving. Loft insulation is necessary if you want to prevent 35% of the heat escaping from your attic area. When covering grants the installation of loft insulation, it is usually the case that all the materials are provided for free.
Material: Wool Glass and Polystyrene Eligibility:
- Your home has a timber roof structure.
- You live in a top-floor flat with a pitched roof.
- The pitched roof area should be clean and empty to add insulation.
- You haven’t insulated the loft before, or the old insulation is less than 100mm thick.
- Your old insulation is yellowish or pink, which means it’s outdated. Replace it with new insulation, usually dark grey or brown.
Cavity Wall Insulation Grants
A typical cavity wall insulation can cost you anywhere between £1,000 to £5,000 based on insulation type, home size and location. Grants can save you from paying this huge cost. Cavity wall insulation involves filling the gap between the two layers of your walls with insulating material. This free insulation prevents 30% heat from escaping through the walls, significantly improving energy efficiency.
Material: Polystyrene Beads Eligibility:
- Your home is at least 30 years old and has a cavity space in the external walls.
- The external walls are made of equally-sized bricks, showing there’s a cavity.
- Your home has never had cavity wall insulation before.
Internal & External Wall Insulation Grants
If you insulate solid walls, you should have a huge budget between £8,000 to £20,000. Government grants provide support to eligible households without breaking the bank. In the case of homes with solid walls, wall insulation works for both internal and external walls to make the home warm. This applies an additional thin layer of insulating material on the building’s outer surface which is then coated with proper finishing such as render or cladding.
Material: Mineral Wool and Expanded Polystyrene Eligibility:
- Homes with solid walls or no insulation are prioritised because they lose more heat.
- The home must have no insulation or poor insulation to qualify for the grants.
- Solid wall properties or homes without cavity walls often need external wall insulation.
- Internal wall insulation is common for homes where outside work is not possible, like heritage or listed buildings.
Why is this significant?
Reduced expenses
